Prof. Nenad Vanis, MD, PhD, FASGE
Specialist in Internal Medicine, Subspecialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology
A specialist in internal medicine and subspecialist in gastroenterology and hepatology with 32 years of experience working with patients.
Born in London, UK, he completed his primary and secondary education in Sarajevo, where he also earned his degree (1991), master's (2001), and PhD (2007) from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sarajevo.
From 1992 to 1995, he gained significant experience as a military doctor. Since 1994, he has been working at the Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, where he completed his specialization in internal medicine and subspecialization in gastroenterology. Since 2001, he has served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, and since 2014, he has held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Propedeutics, teaching postgraduate and doctoral courses. Since 2016, he has been working as a Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and in 2020, he was awarded honorary membership in the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE).
He has completed numerous postgraduate medical courses and trainings, including advanced postgraduate courses in endoscopy, routine and endoscopic ultrasound, World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) training for trainers in gastroenterology, as well as various training programs in endoscopy, gastroenterology, hepatology, ultrasound, oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, clinical nutrition, and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) organized by the American Heart Association.
At the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, he served as Head of the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Endoscopy, Head of Internal Intensive Care, Medical Advisor to the General Director, and Head of the Institute for Gastroenterology and Hepatology. From 2018 to 2021, he was the Medical Director of "Middle East Hospital" in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
He has also completed advanced education in healthcare management (SHCE level 3), public institution management in the healthcare system (Faculty of Economics, Sarajevo), the Health Financing Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina – DRG system, the Higher Education Reform Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina (GOPA) supported by the European Union, accreditation and quality training in healthcare in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AKAZ), clinical study principal investigator training (GCP), first-category organ transplant coordinator training (Eurotransplant), and telemedicine education (TEMPUS program, University of Sarajevo).
He has published 52 papers (as first, second, or third author) in internationally recognized journals (SCI list), and authored over 100 papers, publications, and abstracts published in journals not indexed in international databases. He has contributed 15 chapters to five university textbooks, co-authored two monographs, and two medical guidelines (Ministry of Health of Sarajevo Canton). He is the sole author of the university textbook "Symptoms in Gastroenterology" (Bybook, 2022).
He has actively participated in over 100 international congresses, conferences, workshops, and symposiums. He led the project "Prevention of Colorectal Cancer in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina for 70,000 People" (Government of FBiH), the clinical nutrition project in Sarajevo Canton (Health Insurance Institute of Sarajevo Canton), and participated in several domestic and international projects related to drug trials approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), European associations of gastroenterologists (UEG, ESGE, ESBGH), the European Society for Clinical Nutrition (ESPEN), the Association of Gastroenterologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Association for Clinical Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Currently, he is the President of the Endoscopic Section of the Association of Gastroenterologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, President of the Association of Physicians for Clinical Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bosnia and Herzegovina's representative on the Board of the European Society of Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ESBGH) and the Mediterranean Task Force for Cancer Control (MTCC). He was also a Board Member (2001–2015) of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition (ESPEN) and a member (2014–2017) of the Scientific Committee of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO).
He is currently involved in drafting the European Gastroenterology Curriculum (ESBGH) and the European Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence in Gastroenterology (ESGE).
