Home Care After Coronary Stent Implantation

Instructions for Patients with a Femoral (Groin) Access Site:

  • It is normal to have some bruising or a small hematoma around the puncture site. However, if it suddenly begins to enlarge, contact your doctor immediately.
  • For the first 2 days, when sneezing, coughing, laughing, or during bowel movements, gently press on the puncture site.
  • You may shower 1 day after the stent implantation.
  • Avoid heavy physical activity for 5 days after discharge. For example: do not lift anything heavier than 5 kg, vacuum, move furniture, climb stairs, run, or swim.

Instructions for Patients with a Radial (Wrist) Access Site:

  • Mild tingling or discomfort in the arm is normal during the first 3 days. If you experience severe pain, contact your doctor.
  • You may shower the day after the procedure.
  • Do not place strain on the affected arm for 5 days (e.g., do not use it to push yourself up or lift heavy objects).
  • After stent implantation, do not drive for 2 days after discharge. You must not drive yourself home—someone else must accompany you.

Physical Activity:

  • After the first 7 days, you may begin with light physical activity (such as walking), at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week.
  • Do not begin walking if you feel fatigued or if the weather is very cold.
  • If you experience any discomfort during physical activity (such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, or prolonged fatigue afterward), reduce the intensity.
  • If you have not previously been physically active, increase the level of activity gradually.

Cardiac Rehabilitation:

  • Whenever possible, you should participate in a supervised cardiac rehabilitation program at a certified physical therapy center or health spa.

Return to Work:

  • Recommendations will be provided in your discharge letter based on the type of procedure and the nature of your job.

Smoking Cessation Is MANDATORY!

Diet:

  • Many patients need to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
  • You should increase intake of heart-protective foods.
  • A healthy diet can lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, and help manage excess weight.

IMPORTANT!
At the time of hospital discharge, your doctor will provide personalized recommendations for post-procedure care and ongoing therapy, based on a face-to-face consultation. This includes maintaining target levels for blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipids.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can the stent move after it has been implanted?
No. Once placed, the stent remains securely in position.

Can I go through a metal detector with a stent?
Yes, without any concern. Stents are made from non-magnetic materials and will not trigger metal detectors.

What if I experience chest pain again?
If chest pain returns, contact your cardiologist promptly.

Can I undergo an MRI scan with a stent?
Yes. MRI scans are generally safe. However, always inform the medical staff performing the scan that you have a coronary stent.
